First 100km done and dusted.

Family and friends, I am delighted to say we completed day 1, alive and in one piece. After a few tractor driving lessons and forest roads crash courses, we left Gosheim just after 11am 21 September.

We decided to follow the bike routes as we wanted to avoid main roads and highways at all costs. I was introduced to a rather hairy nail-biting forest path that had been washed away in the recent rains in Gosheim. It wasn’t a mere 3km into the route. Both of us were a little challenged and awake after avoiding the Donggas, ditches, sharp descend, and trees. Phew!!

Once we were on the open road and the flat spots on the tyres smoothed out, things were running smoothly at 25kmph top speed. 😉 Things were looking good until we reached Fussen near Switzerland, where I had my first encounter with a long steep downhill pass. I grew a pair of steel balls down this pass. Lesson 1 of driving a tractor. Always approach your obstacles in the right gear. There is no changing of gears once you are going up or down. Breaks can only do as much. At the end of the pass, we pulled over into a parking stop for trucks to allow the backup of cars we had caused and to calm the nerves of course 🙃

I am feeling more confident about my tractoring driving skills, but I am sure the next 1900km there will be more to learn.

We spent our first night at Waldshut -tiegen camping grounds. Our trailer was put to the test with some rainfall as we arrived and happy to report that it kept us dry and cozy for a good night’s rest.

We decided to attempt the mountains tomorrow with dry roads and less traffic over the weekend. Today, we enjoyed the sound of the rain on the sails and a little walk down the Rhein River.

Let’s see what adventures tomorrow brings and what how many kilometers our Bulldog can eat away.

Namatrip our people.
